Feminism - The Positives and the Negatives.

Feminism. The fight for equal rights amongst males and females alike. Feminist movements were lauded throughout 2019, with the #MeToo movement being the most notable. I, for one, strongly believe in EQUAL rights, and I am definitely pro-feminism. However, are there any negative repercussions that come along with the feminism movement?

For starters, feminism promotes the fight for equality, as there has been a long-standing history of prejudice against women, with women being ostracized or treated unfairly simply for being different from their male counterparts. Secondly, it calls out contemporary issues that women face on a daily basis, which have been ignored in the past due to the misogynistic nature of our society. One example is the gender pay gap. The gender pay gap or gender wage gap is the average difference between the remuneration for men and women who are working. Women are generally considered to be paid less than men.

Although the gender pay gap can be attested due to several reasons, I believe one of the main reasons for the difference is gender. Industry discrimination is widely prevalent in the workplace these days, so much so that laws have been implemented to protect women against discrimination. Gender roles play a huge part in said discriminatory behavior. A 2015 meta-analysis of studies of experimental studies of gender in hiring found that "men were preferred for male-dominated jobs (i.e., gender-role congruity bias), whereas no strong preference for either gender was found for female-dominated or integrated jobs”.

Thirdly, feminism is empowering. Seeing women getting the respect and recognition they deserve is empowering. Seeing changes being made to fuel a more inclusive society is empowering. Seeing people from all walks of life gathering together to fight for a common cause is empowering.

Unbeknownst to many, feminism can actually promote misandry, which happens through the misunderstanding of feminism. Misandry is the hatred of, contempt for, or prejudice against men or boys in general. Many people fail to understand that feminism is not an “anti-male” movement, but rather, it’s a movement that promotes equality. However, I have seen multiple cases of misandry forming amidst the fight against misogyny. This, in turn, gives feminism a bad name, with radical feminists referred to as “feminazis”.

Feminism is beneficial, but proper understanding of the movement is pivotal to its success.
