What is a zine?

a 'zine' is a small magazine! Zines are often independently published booklets which feature a range of things, from fandom content to comics, to poetry, to art and more. Zines are often inexpensive or free.

A brief history of zines

Arguably the first zines in circulation were science fiction zines in the 1930s, some examples include, ‘The Comet’ and ‘Fantasy Commentator’. The link between sci-fi and zines developed as the first star trek fanzine was published in the late 60s. In the 1970s and 1980s, zines became an aspect of punk culture—likely due to the DIY aspect of producing and spreading zines, zines such as ‘Slash’ and ‘Sniffin’ Glue’ covered key punk bands of the 70s and 80s.

Nowadays there has been a resurgence in zines, and they haven’t lost their DIY aspect, making them cheap and easy to make at home and share with your friends.

Where do I start?

The beauty of making zines is the fact that you can start, wherever you like. What is something that interests you? Do you have some art you’d like to curate into a handy booklet, or are you hoping to create a zine to spread awareness of a subject close to your heart?

How do I start?

If you want to get started then all you need is a piece of paper or two, depending on how many pages you want, you can then fold and stable the spine of the zine. Or you can use a method where you fold a sheet of A4 three times so it’s in six sections, then you make a slit between the first two sections, push both sections together and fold the pages in—this is a tricky method to get used to but there are plenty of online templates an tutorials that can be easily found on Google. If you’d prefer to make your zine online, I recommend using ‘Electric Zine Maker’ which is free to download.

Once you have made your booklet then cover each page in whatever you like, I often use magazine clippings, glitter, and sequins, or print out poems I have written or photos I have taken.

Once you have made your zine, if you wish to, then it is fairly inexpensive to get the zines printed, many services offer printing online, or your zine can be shared as a PDF or simply kept for yourself.

Now go forth and get zine making!
